Dlow (Demond D-Low)

Duman known as Dlow, is three feet, one inch tall. This condition only affects the length of his bones. Everything else about he is the same as the next man. When he was younger he suppose one thing is everybody's kind of laughing at him, kind of thinking that he'is so radically different. People not taking him seriously. It's going to take him an extra step, but he promise he has to do everything that everybody else could do. Give him a step stool and he is unstoppable.

Question1: So what's it like living with Dorsfism?

Dlow: Um, I don't know, I suppose I don't really know the difference without it. Uh, just extra steps. Extra steps to do everything I suppose. Like that. Just little extra steps like that I guess. My condition is SED, Spondyloepiphizio dysplasia. It's just the form of Dorsfism that affects the length of my bones. Everything else about me is not my normal size organs. I got, you know: I got a no*rmal size head. Everything else about me is the same as the next man. You collect shoes? I do. I'm a Nike head. Can you tell? Yeah, a whole lot. My favorite pair is probably these Lebron 16s right here. This is one pair just like this. They come black and white. They're meant to represent equality in this country and it's just fitting with everything that's going on, you know? Equality everybody. Equality. When I was younger, I suppose one thing was everybody kind of, you know, laughing at you, thinking that you're so radically different that they saw you as a joke, I suppose, in a way. That's probably the most painful for sure. People not taking me seriously. There's a lot of misconceptions about Dorsfism, but the biggest one for me that I've noticed is just that people thinking, you know, you're not able to do it. That you can't keep up, you know, with the average high person. And I can, for sure, it's going to take me extra step, but I promise I can do everything that everybody else can do. Now I'm going to do my quick protein shape.

Question2:  See? All the little steps.

Dlow: There's all the little steps. Right now I'm just making my little protein shape for Jim. Just make sure that's a fuel in me. Otherwise I might fall out in there. What? Are you working so hard? I started going to the gym. I was 15 years old actually. I started playing varsity baseball. Believe it or not. Yeah, I made varsity baseball team. And you know, all my teammates were like, "Yo, if you want to get stronger and have a harder, faster swing, you need to put in the work. You started lifting weights. They kind of put me on a resume, taught me different workouts. From there, I kind of just realized, I'm like, nang, lifting weights, like looking at myself. I'm actually getting stronger. I'm actually progressing physically and makes me feel a hell of a lot better for sure.

Question3: When I see the mind, I don't see dwarfism. I see a built man. Sometimes people are really shocked because they're like, "Damn, he can lift that much weight. They're like, yeah. And sometimes our skinny friends come over and they try to lift with us. And they can't lift the weight he can do. So it's like, that size only means so much.

Dlow:  The gym isn't really that accessible for someone with dwarfism. But that's no excuse at all. If there's one thing that I have trouble doing, there's a thousand other things that I can do. The one thing that helped me back was, I guess, just worrying about other people's opinions. Always worrying about, you know, what are people going to think about seeing someone like me working out. But after a while, it's like, you know, their opinions don't matter. Everybody got to start somewhere. So why stress what someone else may or may not think about what you're doing. With boxing, I suppose at the time, I was kind of just looking for, you know, something else to do, you know, another sport to do, something else to try to, you know, motivate me and try to take me up a notch, you know, physically and mentally. Of course, I love it right away. When I tell people about I box, their reaction is definitely a surprise. They're kind of curious for sure. But then when they see me, they're like, oh no, like this little guy really can't fight. I still got a long way to go, but, you know, till then I'm going to keep training. When I hear, you know, average, hype people making an excuse, say, oh, I don't feel like it. Oh, I'm tired. My body's sore, so and so. And I'm like, my body, I'm kind of like, yo, my body's sore every day. You know, my legs be sore, my legs be sore every day. For every three steps, I take y'all take one step. I'm like, if I could do that, you know, you could do it. So it really shouldn't be, it really shouldn't be no excuse at all. I had a lot of good and bad experience, a lot of learning experiences, a lot of disappointment at times. But it definitely all led me to where I am now, for sure. Don't be afraid to speak your mind and put your opinions out there. Don't be afraid to try new things. You will fail in life sometimes, but the important thing is, is that what you do after that failure.
